I was only familiar with Augustin Hadelich by reputation, I'd never heard him play. However, after hearing this disc, I am anxious to hear more of him. One review in the media recently said of him, "He's a member of the short list of greatest violinists of today." True statement! The Bartok Solo Sonata, the first number on the disc, is the most noteworthy, and it is played outstandingly. The Ysaye Sonata #3, "Ballade", is overplayed and although Hadelich plays it well, it just kinda feels like "another rendition of it", nothing much different than 20-30 other recordings. The Ysaye Sonata #5, played less often, was a welcome addition. I wish he'd included the #6 too, instead of the #3. Several Paganini Caprices are all played well too. Carrying off a solo recital, without accompaniment, is always quite a feat and I'd like toe hear Hadelich do this sometime. I'm sure it would be amazing! He's one of the few who infuses profound feeling into what otherwise might be purely technical works. People tend to think of Paganini and Ernst and Wieniawski and even Ysaye as "left hand pieces" but in fact, they wrote real music! Anyhow, I am anxious to hear Hadelich's concerto recordings, but am glad I bought this disc first!
