Product Description "A brilliant violinist." -- New York Times A child prodigy, Hadelich was educated at Italy's Instituto Mascagni and was poised for a major international career. However, his rapid rise was interrupted by a horrific accident in which he was burned over most of his body. After repeated operations and months of rehab, Hadelich has made an artistic comeback of astonishing proportions. His remarkable strength of character, determination, joy of life, and passion for music meld in a soulful, witty personality who also possesses a rare talent--and all of these qualities shine brightly on his solo debut recording. Review "Brilliant violinist" -- The New York Times"Hadelich is in touch with the sunny side of the violin. He can dig in; he can probe it; he can make the instrument bark when the music calls for it. But his default seems to be the warm lyrical joy of lilting melody." -- Washington Post"There is something unique about his playing: perhaps a purity of intent or a direct line to what is essential in the music... Hearing him play ... makes me happy ... While the music is playing, I have a feeling that all is right with the world ... the future of great violin playing is safe and very bright in Augustin Hadelich's 24-year-old hands." -- American Record Guide"a masterful musician" --The Strad About the Artist Augustin Hadelich, who makes his solo debut recording with Flying Solo, is a brilliant young violinist with a remarkable personal story. A child prodigy, he was educated at the Instituto Mascagni in Livorno, Italy and while still a teenager was poised for a major international career. His rapid rise was, however, interrupted by a horrific accident in which he was burned over most of his body and not expected to survive. After repeated operations and months of rehab, not only has he lived to tell his tale, but has made an artistic comeback of astonishing proportions. Augustin moved to New York to resume his studies and went on to receive the Artist Diploma from The Juilliard School. In 2006, he was the Gold Medallist at the International Violin Competition of Indianapolis, and in 2009 was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Grant, a $25,000 cash prize that has previously been given to such artists as Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell and Murray Perahia. I was only familiar with Augustin Hadelich by reputation, I'd never heard him play. However, after hearing this disc, I am anxious to hear more of him. One review in the media recently said of him, "He's a member of the short list of greatest violinists of today." True statement! The Bartok Solo Sonata, the first number on the disc, is the most noteworthy, and it is played outstandingly. The Ysaye Sonata #3, "Ballade", is overplayed and although Hadelich plays it well, it just kinda feels like "another rendition of it", nothing much different than 20-30 other recordings. The Ysaye Sonata #5, played less often, was a welcome addition. I wish he'd included the #6 too, instead of the #3. Several Paganini Caprices are all played well too. Carrying off a solo recital, without accompaniment, is always quite a feat and I'd like toe hear Hadelich do this sometime. I'm sure it would be amazing! He's one of the few who infuses profound feeling into what otherwise might be purely technical works. People tend to think of Paganini and Ernst and Wieniawski and even Ysaye as "left hand pieces" but in fact, they wrote real music! Anyhow, I am anxious to hear Hadelich's concerto recordings, but am glad I bought this disc first!
